Haldi
What Happens in a Bengali Haldi?
1. Yellow Everywhere
Guests wear yellow, gold, or marigold colours.
Decor has a lot of marigold flowers, banana leaves, and rangoli.
2. Applying the Turmeric
Close family members take turns putting haldi paste on:
Face
Hands
Feet
Some families do it gently… some will playfully smear a LOT. 😄
3. Fun, Dancing, Music
Bengalis love singing “Gaye Holud’er Gan” (folk haldi songs).
Nowadays people also play Bollywood/mixed playlists and dance.
4. Fish & Sweets Tradition (very Bengali!)
A decorated Rohu fish is often gifted to the bride/groom’s family in some traditional households.
Tons of sweets—especially rosogolla, sandesh, mishti doi—are served.
5. Photos & Playfulness
People smear haldi on each other.
There’s usually a photographer capturing fun candid moments.
Baraat
The Baraat is a celebratory procession where the groom travels from his home to the wedding venue accompanied by:
His family
Friends
Music band
Dancers
Sometimes performers (dhol players, horsemen, DJs)
It is the groom’s “arrival” as a king/hero.
