Engagement
A Maharashtrian engagement, known as Sakharpuda, is a traditional pre-wedding ceremony that marks the official beginning of a couple’s journey toward marriage. It is a joyous occasion where both families come together to bless the bride and groom.
Rituals & Traditions
1. Ganesh Puja – The ceremony starts with prayers to Lord Ganesha for blessings and a smooth wedding journey.
2. Exchange of Gifts – The groom’s family presents the bride with a Sakharpuda (a cone-shaped packet of sugar), symbolizing the sweetness of their future relationship. She also receives sarees, jewelry, and other gifts.
3. Ring Exchange (optional) – Traditionally, Maharashtrians do not have a ring exchange, but modern engagements often include this ritual.
4. Official Announcement – Elders from both families announce the engagement and bless the couple with Akshata (unbroken rice grains) for prosperity.
5. Feast & Celebration – The ceremony concludes with a meal and celebrations with friends and relatives.
Haldi
Halad Chadavane (Haldi Ceremony)
A turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom at their respective homes to purify and bless them.
Friends and family often turn it into a fun, playful event.
