JUROON
The wedding festivities typically begin with a pre-wedding ceremony called the JURON, which is usually held a few days before the main wedding day. This ceremony is performed at the bride’s residence and is conducted by the groom’s mother and close female relatives. They visit the bride’s home bearing gifts like the Assamese traditional attire (mekhela chador), jewelry, cosmetics, betel nuts, sweets, and assorted traditional items packed in decorative trays. The act of gifting during JURON symbolizes the acceptance of the bride by the groom’s family and marks the beginning of the matrimonial bond. Another important pre-wedding ritual is the Tel Diya ceremony, wherein the groom’s mother applies a mixture of mustard oil, curd, and turmeric on the bride’s hair and body. This ritual is believed to purify and bless the bride, preparing her for the marital journey ahead. A similar ceremony is also held at the groom’s residence.
PANI TOLA
Following the wedding, several post-wedding rituals are observed. One of the joyful traditions is the PANI TOLA or PANI DAAN, a playful ceremony where the couple engages in water games, often involving floating rings, coins, or colored water, symbolizing the spirit of companionship, love, and fun in marriage. It also helps break the initial awkwardness between the newlyweds and brings joy to both families. Another tradition called SUAGAMAN is held a few days later when the bride visits her maternal home, now as a married woman, often accompanied by her husband. She is welcomed with love and given gifts and blessings.
Wedding
An Assamese wedding, known as "Biya," is a graceful and traditional affair marked by rituals like juron (gift-giving), tel diya (auspicious blessings), and the biya naam (wedding ceremony). The bride wears a mekhela chador, often in silk, while the groom dons a traditional dhoti kurta. Music, dance, and authentic Assamese cuisine add to the celebration's charm, reflecting deep cultural roots and family bonds.
