Wedding Day Rituals 1. Kanyadaanam / Madhuparkam The bride, dressed traditionally in a Kasavu saree (white or off-white with golden border), is escorted to the mandap. The groom usually wears a mundu and shirt or a kasavu veshti. The bride’s father places her hand in the groom’s, symbolizing handing over responsibility. 2. Thaali Kettu (Mangalsutra Tying) The groom ties the sacred thaali (mangalsutra) around the bride’s neck, amidst the chanting of mantras and the blowing of the conch. This is the most important moment of the wedding. 3. Exchange of Garlands (Mala Maattal) The couple exchanges garlands three times, signifying acceptance of each other. 4. Sparsham The groom sits on the floor, and the bride touches his feet with her toes, symbolizing respect and mutual commitment. 5. Sadhya (Feast) A grand Kerala feast is served on banana leaves, with delicacies like avial, sambar, olan, payasam, and more.
