This is a traditional Tamil engagement ceremony (Nichayathartham) where both families officially come together to bless the couple and announce the wedding. The event begins with a Ganapathi pooja to seek divine blessings, followed by the exchange of trays (seer varisai) containing fruits, sweets, flowers, coconut, and gifts between the families. The bride and groom exchange rings as a symbol of their commitment. Elders from both sides formally read the wedding agreement (lagna patrikai) and fix the wedding date and muhurtham. The couple receives blessings from elders by touching their feet, and turmeric and kumkum are applied as a sign of prosperity. The ceremony concludes with traditional music, photographs, and a festive feast served to family and friends, celebrating the beginning of the couple’s journey together.
